PART 82

This would likely set him back a few quid, but he was intent on getting a replacement for the said papers, even if it meant spending more money.

The immediate followup to this thought was making a few calls on the cell phone. Before this he made another re-run down through the cheat sheets. There were some immediate questionable tidbits on all but one of the papers.
PART 81

It only took a moment, but Jamie did find out: the cheat sheets his inside man had given him were largely inaccurate and misleading. It can be darn right futile and frustrating to be entangled in such inconsistent information.

He had it all worked out: he was going to place some bets; as many as five different bets, but he had refrained from using his usual contacts in the betting XC8 circles.

PART 80

What I usually say to this is: try telling that to a rider on a single wheel cycle.
PART 79

It may be further argued though, that if you pass the ball quickly, then no one clashes with you for the ball.

And if you do this smoothly enough then you don't really need prowess as much as intuition to score or stay in the game.
PART 78

I believe there is a case to be made for such an arguement, but only just so. This is because of what is termed the cluster-effect, in XC8 matchups.

What this term means is that in an average- rated matchup, played by average teams, there is a trend of teams clashing and clustering.

This happens as a result of players' lack of prowess on the roller boots and the ball.
PART 77

To be truly good and be one of the greatest, one can't have one without the other.

But some, who only understand the rudiments of the game would argue that if you are very intuitive you could do much more than get by, in an average - rated game.

With all the deft, strategic and blindsided passes you could prove to be a real asset to a winning side.
PART 76

Intuition is more like the sixth sense, the third eye or the eyes behind your head with which you perceive an opponent after you or a proponent you may need to pass the ball to.

While prowess is the ability and agility with which you retain your balance, control and speed.
PART 75

Playing a game that requires a great deal of balance and control as the XC8 game, demands that the players have not only a great deal of intuition but also a great deal of prowess and speed.
PART 74

For the sake of the interest of a wider audience I would digress and elaborate a little more.
PART 73

The same intuition it takes to play a fast game of XC8 is the same it takes to spot a menacing fanatic in the crowd, especially one who is not afraid to let on that he is a threat and should be rightly feared.

But relying on just your intuition to pay a game of XC8 is another matter entirely.
PART 72

I mean intuitively, one could pick out the trouble makers from the whole lot. They are often eager to boast after their own kind and show off their misdemeanour with effrontery.

So it shouldn't have been that difficult for the security details to pick them out from the genuine and enthusing fans.
PART 71

When I look retrospectively at what happened that weekend evening I would often overlook what subsequently happened and would instead try and reckon, how for the life of me, was such an offensive object smuggled into the Arena without the security details getting even an inkling of what was about to happen.
PART 70

Somehow, inspite of the massive presence of security at the entry points to the Arena, he had managed to smuggle in a flare gun and was beginning to brandish the same in defiance of the others around him, who were expectedly shocked and initially restrained.
PART 69

Let me take you back to the Arena.

I believe he was in the fourth row, about three rows behind the one closest to the rail separating the spectating crowd from the play. I was somewhere in the sixth row.

But this gentleman who decided to take matters into his own hands was only less than a stone's throw from me.

Saturday, September 19, 2009

PART 68

He would be heckled to bare bones in a minute if he falls into the hands of the wrong fan.

Thursday, September 17, 2009

PART 67

Funny?

He prefers the smooth wooden round of the Arena to the crowded seats of the same.

Not so funny when you consider his popularity with some and his infamy with others.
PART 66

For this reason and a few others an immense amount of pressure seems to be on the campaign organisers and the security details assigned to ensure a riot free matchup.

Chaos.

Julio. He prefers a lesser dose of the atmosphere of an XC8 matchup.
PART 65

The XC8 game differs a bit - with the fanaticism, that is. The reason being that, for every square 8 feet in the Arena, is two to four different person supporting two to four different teams.

But then, imagine what would happen if there is an upheaval in the Arena.
PART 64

Now, positive energies are shown in varying ways but the basic human character or behavioural norms are universal. There is a sister game to the XC8 game, that is always played by two opposing sides.

People who troop out to watch such teams often go far...sometimes too far, to show their fanaticisms for the game.
PART 63

This did not deter his earlier decision to watch the matchup above a glass or two and amidst unfamiliar but tolerant enthusiasts...tolerant, even if not friendly.

It may not be too familiar a turf to find him in a local drinking spot that is not exactly within frequently visited whereabouts.

But he expected only positive energy. And bore no antagonism for the opposing teams, nor whoever would be supporting them

Tuesday, September 15, 2009

PART 62

But who would guess that not for a mile radius from his immediate environ was there any public bar or eatery where the matchup was being shown

Tuesday, September 8, 2009

PART 61

There is nothing stranger than going out for a drink on an XC8 weekend and there is no matchup on the subscription channel. As it turned out though...Julio Amstern had the subscription in his home but he had neither drinks nor company.

It wasn't for the want of fresh draught or company that he really wanted to go out. It was merely the desire for an atmosphere befeating of a game of such importance as the matchup of the Rootugs, Boomers, Trenchmen and the Drones

Friday, August 28, 2009

PART 60

''Are you okay?''

''I need to catch my breathe - it feels like a repetition of the time I attended a game and there was a sudden upheaval and riot in the crowd.''

''I got a sudden and strong sense of it,'' she added.
PART 59

Suddenly, Zain was hit by a claustrophobic and overwhelming feeling. She sat down heavily with her eyeballs moving from one direction to another, dizzy and engulfed by a feeling that felt very much like vertigo.

She held the rail in front of them with both hands.

Monday, August 24, 2009

PART 58

Another sudden eruption in the Arena...

Peace breathed heavily,''Sweet Jesus.''

Magna giggled. Zain gestured animatedly and yelled,''that's my Geenie - way to go boy.''
PART 57

''Hey! Geenie, move up Geenie,'' this was Magna Squealing heavily as Geenie regained possesion.

Geenie slid the ball past a Rootugs and a Boomers offensive, clipping the ball with the tip of his right roller-boot.

The ball ricocheted off the knee guard of a Trenchmen defensive and off the right side of the Trenchmen keeper before lodging itself firmly in the Trenchmen's goal square.

Tuesday, August 18, 2009

PART 56

The Boomers were 8 goals to 6 for the Drones, 5 for the Rootugs, and 3 for the Trenchmen XC8 team.

Monday, August 17, 2009

PART 55

Wooh!

''This guy is getting to me - I wish the team would take a recess for a while... at least long enough for him to get a grip of himself.''

Peace was refering to the fellow behind her.
PART 54

'' But then you are one tough act to follow - I mean...your tastes in shoes and bags are frantically monumental...if ever there was such an expression.''

'' Hey ! Girls, whoever told you I overindulge in assesories? I only take what I need - I have a high sense of fashion you both would agree.''

'' Yeah Zain - but all that shoes,'' Magna exasperated in humour.
PART 53

Peace turned in a bemused sort of shock at Zain and in her good nature giggled.

''but he is very nicey'', she said.

''Even though he is not as matured as you are,'' she continued.

''I would say Austen was more of the proper kind of catch - if only he could make up his mind about me,'' Zain added, shouting above the sudden increase in din in the Arena.
PART 52

In between shouts and the sudden eruptions the three tried to catch up on a few. Magna turned to Zain to say something in digression.

''Fancy you leaving Geenie for Austen.''

''Austen has more brains on his fingertips than Geenie has in the whole of his head,'' Zain retorted.
PART 51

This said day, she attends an XC8 game on the 44th ticket, Geenie had been kind and hopefully pursuant enough to provide. He knew Zain did not really like to be this close to the game in an XC8 arena.

I guess it was his own way of saying: the game is rough and tough, but also very exciting.

Friday, August 14, 2009

PART 50

Peace... is an interesting person, so interesting that it is almost dissagreeable or largely unbecoming, to use the terms; interesting character to talk about her. But Zain chooses her words carefully when she talks and when she talks she chooses to use such words as to reveal a mysterious or at least a sophisticated side to her personality.
PART 49

Well, don't get me wrong - she loves Geenie...in a polite sort of way. I mean she respects him more than she loves him. She knows it takes hard work to be an XC8 player. It is physical thing - just like posing for a photo shoot.

She looks at Peace. Her name rarely symbolizes anything other than it's actual meaning. I mean she is in love. she married for love, and wealth was thrown in for good measure. If she decides it, she doesn't have to lift a finger to do a day's job - how boring...very boring.
PART 48

It was a while since Zain actually had this much fun and with two good friends for that matter. She knows Peace does not care too much for XC8 games...like herself...but Magna, that is another matter. she should be the one running after those stunt crazy players, not yours truly...you know.

Monday, August 10, 2009

PART 47

Again Zain was greatly taken in by the power of the atmosphere. It was as if someone had taken a 100mg size syringe and had pumped her full with adrenlin. But this adrenlin only manifested as a rushy excitement, which she shared with her friends and hundreds of other people in the Lightening Arena.
PART 46

But Geenie was knocked off the ball by a Rootugs offensive. Falling one knee he lurched forward for a penalty call.

The Umpire blew for a repossession by the Drones XC8 team

Wednesday, August 5, 2009

PART 45

Well, it is not a question of just defending your goal square - you have to stop the three other opposing teams from scoring any goal at any goal square

Geenie, the Drones XC8 second offensive finally got the ball from the Boomers' offensive. He made a swift turn and then stopped himself just on time to avoid clashing into a Trenchmen offensive. He made for the Trenchmen goal square.

The strategy was to avoid the Boomers' goal square, for a goal against the Boomers would give them the possession after the goal - a risky choice.
PART 44

What's more - any one player in any one team could score at the three other goal squares in the round or the field of hard wood, making it, at times a most chaotic affair.

Another...

Wooh! The boomers' number 27 man; the defensive had swapped places with the number 33 man. He was up against the Rootugs' first offensive. The two offensives of the Trenchmen XC8 team were tangled up with the first offensive of the Drones, who was very determine to stop the number 27 of the Boomers.

This was inspite of the fact that it was Rootugs goal square the Boomers' man was aiming for.

Friday, July 24, 2009

PART 43

Actually they have the option of swapping at any point in the game. but all three of them must agree quickly, with the onus of the choice falling on the hands of the defensive player.

The emphasis is on individual performances with the view to winning the matchup for the team
PART 42

Wooh! By this time the three remaining teams were seriously rearing to go. No one player wanted to be left out in the cold without the opportunity to stamp their authority on the score sheets. Defensives were swapping places with offensives - perfectly normal.

The rules state that if a defensive player has his goal post scored at, he has the right to swap places with any of the two other offensive players.

Thursday, July 23, 2009

PART 41

Unfortunately there were no players with the 44th jersey in the matchup. That jersey belong to a certain member of the Redhook XC8 team. Naturally, there were a lot of 44 jerseys in the spectating crowd - with names: Tommy Delany and a few others on them. It was the spectators' way of supporting a player who was once best player of the annual series.
PART 40

I must point out before I recount more of what happened in the Lightening Arena that weekend, that inspite of the fact, a team is allowed only as many as twenty players in total, most teams formed the habit of selecting numbers for their jerseys well into the sixties.

Sometimes even numbers close to the nineties are chosen, but this does not derail the regulation that a team can only field 3 players and 4 substitutes in any one matchup.

Where am I going with this: there is a special jersey for the last year's player of the annual series... the highest scorer...Yes, you guessed it right - the 44 jersey.
PART 39

The game had started in earnest. It was a matchup of the Drones, the Boomers, the Rootugs and the Trenchmen XC8 teams.

Scores were at Boomers:6 to Drones: 4, Rootugs and the Trenchmen: 2 a piece.

''Hey Geenie has two goals in,'' Peace pointed at the scores on the enormous illuminated scoreboard.

A sudden...

''Wooh! Watch that geezer'', that was someone sitting directly behind her.

The Arena erupted again as another Boomer scored a seventh goal. His name: Tommy Delany-wearing the black and yellow jersey of the Boomers with the number 33 on it.

Tuesday, July 21, 2009

PART 38

She was taken in by the presence of the new arena and the drowning sounds of it's supporters. I mean, this was not the first time she was attending an XC8 game but with a place like the Lightening Arena, it was like an ant stepping into a beehive. And I mean that in a sweet way.

The Lightening Arena is no place for the xenophobic nor those who have a fear of clustered spaces. None of the three suffered any such phobia...they were in fact the perfect representation of extreme excitement...annoying...maybe, but certainly not scary, in that sense of the word.
PART 37

Zain loved her sport utility vehicles, but she had three warning and a suspension to contend with, so, instead Magna was assigned that role.

Despite Magna opting to pick up Peace first...giving enough time to Zain to prepare for the event, they still were not on time.

''Who has the 44th?''

''Come...we have missed the startoffs.''

''Check in here...that's the 43rd and the42nd.''

''Come on...not much time now!''

''We are here.....already''
PART 36

On the 10th hour of the same day Zain Goodfallen had hooked up with the other two; namely Peace Conneri and Magna Moonstone. She had eventually decided that if she was to spend a sweaty and exhilarating evening in the Lightening Arena, it would be in the company of the two.

The reason - or part of it, being that one being a model like her and the other a dietician, the occasion could serve as an opportunity to seek support for her dwindling career.

This was an under tone of how she really felt - she wanted the companionship of very familiar friends in whom she could confide in, even though she had other friends she could have bequeathed the tickets on.

Monday, July 20, 2009

PART 35

''The Reds and their silly money...so, he must have an agent then.''

''No, he said different...he did the initial contact through a few friendly players.''

''Then he must be very good.''

''I guarantee it...you could say as good as Geenie.''

I gave him a card with Julio Amstern name and number on, he said something to the effect that he would be speaking to his topman. And as I turned to leave, he asked if I was game for the day's game.

My response was in the affirmative.
PART 34

Jon knew I had access to an extensive contact of XC8 oldhands, players and enthusiasts. So he tended to trust my judgement.

''Well the truth is that I haven't seen him play a full round yet...but I have seen him in training twice.''

''That should be good enough, I know you have a keen eye for the good ones...we still have Geenie Stuart...at least for the next two annuals.''

''I was led to believe that he wasn't content at Drones.''

''Just player's brinksmanship, Fred...he wanted more.''
PART 33

However I am all for frankness in these matters: how you run your custom or agency depends on the credibility of your clients; past and present. So, no good agent would want anything to do mediocrity. And when they do get real talent, they hoard them like they are made of precious stones.

This does not make it any easier for the upstart who needs the experience and the allowance to make a reasonable degree of progress in the game.

That is why Jon likes to meet people like me to discuss young talented upstarts - some of whom may not be known or tried yet.
PART 32

Now a lot of scouts and agents are, kind of like conmen. Well to Jon they are...like that breed of feline creatures who take the preservations of their pride darn right seriously.

But it is widely accepted that they are undeniably an integral part of a system that operates for the players' contract, welfare and transfers: a readily available market.

Some I would admit are an added value to the XC8 circles. But some add no goodwill to the good of the game.
PART 31

Jon Richmond knows it hasn't been all smooth and auspicious the last few annuals but he is also aware that the transfer market is brimming with serious overtures and offers of contractual purchases.

His superiors have been looking at a young offensive player, with the possible output of five successive seasons, in the mouth. They believe he may be a bit over-priced but they have also not overlooked his present ranking and the youthful vigour with which he approaches most offensives.

The secret and open negotiations had long begun in earnest.

Thursday, July 9, 2009

PART 30

Within the first few minutes, I ran into him, the experienced hand immediately lurched into what sounded like a sketchy narrative of the overall state of the XC8 season.

Now, we both know...and it does go without saying that though the Drone team is up for grabs this year, they are still the team to defeat.

''Yeah, I heard that before.''

''Well, it does seem like the usual play of the top five.''

He lurched further into more...I personally believed it sounded more like a litany rather than a believeable precis of the top five teams...as at the end of the last annuals.

At the end of the last annuals, Drones were second only to Redhooks, coming up on a close third was Xonos, and then there were the Rootugs and the Arians XC8 teams.

Tuesday, July 7, 2009

PART 29

I cannot express in enough certain terms what the Lightening Arena looks like. But I would say it is nothing less than magnificence in brick and steel...a grand presence in white, red, purple and yellow.

I am almost always in awe each time I walk the routes by the Arena, which is as close as one gets to see the size of it and its greatness without actually being inside it.

By the time I walked to one of it's entrances I ran into the man I was hoping to see.
PART 28

Somewhere between the 3rd and 6th hour on most saturdays, the Lightening Arena is open to pre-match cleanup and decor teams. Also open, though more frequently, is the mini complex that establishes the various fan and management offices of the Drone XC8 teams.

Jon R. Richmond is one of the Round keepers doubling as security details. Rumour has it that Jon is the man to meet if you want a bit of an insider's tip on what the Drone management are planning for the season.

Anyway, Jon Richmond is no stranger to facilitating the trickle of hype or hearsay about the Drone teams, any time scouts and agents approach him...not to mention when familiar faces like me meet with him.

Monday, July 6, 2009

PART 27

At this point Magna was beginning to make a few references to her own relationships with the few men still in her life...aside her brothers, that is. It inevitably ended up with them talking about their mutual friend; Zain whom Magna disclosed was nursing a ''comeback'' with Geenie Stuart...or so she heard.

They both understood that what Zain wanted and perhaps needed, was a glamorous relationship with a person of ''star'' quality that would...like the last time she dated someone like Geenie...put her up there in the news and then favourable ratings with the media.
PART 26

As a spin off from her long and frequent spells abroad, she had taken to amateur photography...or more to the facts, posting pictures on facebook and flickr dot com.

She proceeded to show the other, a few of the pictures she came along with...the one with her and hubby...and some strange faces in the brightly lit poolside bar...smiling in the fire's specks of flame....the other ones of her and sweet pork faced hubby meandering in the main and smaller streets of the capital city
PART 25

A little envy is good for the psychology...isn't it?

Well, lets say she is a little envious of her friend; Peace...who gets to take lengthy enjoyable sunny breaks while she strains her body posing for Revolt magazine. Who knows...maybe she should have married someone wealthy and then lead a life of near boredom.

But then, Peace studied as a dietician...she didn't marry for money.
PART 24

Magna is doing a bit good in the modelling circles. Its a bit difficult to cover all the sudden spells and then stay idle during the lower ebb of work load. But she is looking to go abroad next year.Yes, sounds like cliche doesn't it?

Well, one is always looking to climb over to the other side where the fields seem greener. I will be honest. She is not like her friend who has married an investment banker. She is on a limited budget and has not quite cut it as a very well paid model yet.
PART 23

When I say rookie though, I don't mean like a burgler or a con man. I mean like a freshman with the ability to bring a twist to each game...very skillful with stealing the game or changing its direction.

Magna smiled at Peace across her kitchen table with her own mug in both hands, filled with warm tea...Kenny's tea. She knew Peace returned about ten days ago as promised, but she only got round to see her now since she returned, for the sole reason that she had been out and about trying hard to get another opening in her job.

This was Peace's third attempt at catching her at home.

Friday, July 3, 2009

PART 22

Well one could very well say that the fact she has three domineering brothers could have made her an enthusiast of XC8 games. But I believe that chances are that, even if she had just sisters, she still would be the enthusiast that she is.

Why? Because XC8 players are like movie stars. There is a lot of money moving in the circuits of the games. Magna would know. One of their friends, once dated an XC8 player. He is not so much in her life at the moment...but when they were together, they were rooted to be together even though she is at least six years older.

Zain had her modelling career on the turn of the curve of her peak and ratings (another reason Zain and Magna were friends...they both worked for the same agency once)

And him? His name is Geenie Stuart. He is well known for the being on the most paid rookies list...and living up to the label.
PART 21

Although Magna was about to step out for the day...she had been out of work for a few weeks...which is like forever...she was actually very well pleased to see Peace. The only one person she recalls being close friends with as long as Peace was her brother's sister-in-law; Molly Bertrand.

Of-course she no longer regards her as a friend...rather she regards her as family...a sister that is. With the intent to make up for the sister she never really had (she has three brothers) she tended to take her female friends very seriously.

Next to her best mate Molly, who is about the same age with her, is her close friend Peace.

Thursday, July 2, 2009

PART 20

I recall making earlier references to a certain Zain Goodfallen....a thought about not being sure if I had earned the right to be one of Zain's close friends...

Actually, all three of them...Zain Goodfallen, Magna Moonstone and the surprise visitor: Peace Conneri were very good friends...but what can I say...even good is relative.

All three of them though, could be seen together in mega shops, coffee houses and restaurants enjoying one another's company...most chances they got.
PART 19

Magna Moonstone laughed out loud when she opened the main door to see who it was at her porch. It was a friend who obviously had not seen her for a while. And as it was custom for most female friends like Magna and her friend, they both fell in each other's arms in a massive show of affection.

I think for a minute they both did not notice it was 7 am in the morning and that most others in the neighbourhood were commuting to the day's decreasingly elusive jobs. Or perhaps they simply did not care about any such attention.

Point made...perhaps one would think it a bit too odd to receive such an early visit from a friend one has not seen for weeks.

Well, one should accept that it's reasonable to receive a visit from one whose intention is beating the day's agenda to it...more explicitly...catching one before the day's intinerary calls one away from home.
PART 18

When you bear this in mind, it does sooner or later brings you to the fore for further thought...how do you stumble on a great player for the series? Are they trained from youth or is there any alternate course of action to this somewhat similar process to most older ball games.

I mean if there is anything to go by, picking Julio Amstern on the little I know about him does not exactly chime as a bell of success on the trading floor.

But I did.

Wednesday, July 1, 2009

PART 17

In any difficult game such as the XC8 game one does not necessarily look out, when scouting, for prowess. It may be a fundamental strength but on a closer swot analysis it may not necessarily be an advantage.

Yes, I recall occasional matchups or tussles between prowess and intuition. On those occasions seven out of ten, intuition seemed to be the better player.

Some team management may offer that, what a player lacks in intuition could be made up for in speed. Yes, I bought that idea once when I was a member of one such team.

Speed meant the ability to control because in reality one can't have one without the other.
PART 16

I know...Julio this may be a lot better than skiing, surfing or racing...in some ways...if you like. You may not be making an instant fortune here....but its a whole lot better than the fast life of an XC8 player.

''My friend here says you XC8 very good''

Come on, I know I am good with my hands and feet...but not that good....only just that I miss the thrills of a live match...a good season would probably bring me to level you may find acceptable.

I was beginning to like this fellow...Julio.

Tuesday, June 30, 2009

PART 15

Perhaps it was as a result of my staring for a bit too long...which was actually just a show...that the host said something to the effect that I could have three for the price of two.

''That and the shampoo or even this and this and that at a more competitive price.

I picked up one of the frogs and shook its bulbous contents...it was more viscous than bulbous. I smiled in encouragement, and said something knowledgeable and impressive...chances are that we both couldn't tell what I was talking about.
PART 14

Pertraeus...another friend I consulted...did say he was really good, so I decided to say hi. We let him finish what I believe was a table's display of some organic stuff. I was both impressed and unimpressed by what I saw. At first I went along with what Jamie and a few other had said about him...but when I eventually saw him, I think it became a little more believeable...only just so.

I smiled in mock patronage...I had to show some enthusiasm for what he had in display. It was a small frog coloured in an appropriate green with spots of yellow and black for eyes, made of paper, in the middle of other larger frogs containing organic stuffs.

What Julio was promoting in a display of frogs, flowing clear water and a mix of foamy bubbles were luxury toiletries.
PART 13

Jamie touched me on my left arm...I shouldn't be poking too hard at this bit of information. Point made...it was more likely than not that this information given was true.

How can you tell?

Well I don't. whats more relevant to me is that this fellow is the player he is saying he is. That is the player Jamie's friend is saying he is.

When one thinks more thoroughly about it, it wasn't that relevant at that moment.

Monday, June 29, 2009

PART 12

''What would you like, lamb or chicken?''

''Chicken''

''Me too''

''Make that three''

That's him. His name is Julio. We turned quickly to see the referred: promising, agile, poised and sleek...as sleek as a man gets. The red team got him first.

''Please repeat that...are you saying the red team are taking him on?''

''Who is the source of this information?''
PART 11

We turned right at a junction even busier than the one we just left...and head straight for a church on main street...it wasn't a sunday morning actually...but it was a special mid week church activity organised by some preachers I'm used to seeing on TV.

Point made....it wasn't the regular church Jamie...or more to the point...I attended. But it was a fun activity.

That's him over there. The one with the green blazer...looked like a golf buff to me. But then he looked young enough to be my protege. We met him by the buffet.

Wednesday, June 24, 2009

PART 10

More often than not I had Jamie around, but this was more often on those Saturday nights I happened to be home rather than Wednesdays, which is too far in the week to have him around.Well, Jamie...he is a guy I used to know in church, back then in Greenspolis, right in the middle of the southern axis of Blah Blah country.

Personally I believe the XC8 games series is a bit too complicated for any one person to make an accurate guess without some sort of quiet consultations with those who may be in the know...well one can't be too sure.

Jamie used to have a friend, that knew a friend that had a friend. Jamie and I walked down the busy street with him speaking ...in an unusual context but not so strangely.

''Just tell him ...chewing sticks.''

''Wok''

''Chop sticks''

''Pestle''

''Drum sticks''

''Chicken legs''

''Henry''
PART 09

I dare say this caught on really fast...perhaps for the reason that this prediction was neither entirely nor purely a gamble of sorts. It was expected that with readily available statistics on players' and teams' performances on the ball, one should be able to make a near enough, calculated guess.

But only the very smart seemed to get away with the most accurate predictions. I was one of those. I could sit on my laz-boy chair with a pencil and paper on a cold wednesday night and then draw funny patterns of what I expect the game to be.

Tuesday, June 23, 2009

PART 08

This wasn't the only significance of the 44th seat actually. The original XC8 promoters, in essence wanted the spectators to participate more...by placing bets...like any other sport we know.

They reckoned that, if they give a special preference to the 44th seat and somehow tie that 44th ticket to a permutation and combination of leading scorers and leading teams of the game, they could diversify the odds it took to make an accurate prediction.
PART 07

Invariably it took a while for the game to be fully developed...catering for players safety and control was the main difficulty in the game. But when the game's promoters discovered that beneath the surface of the poor ratings from the old and middle aged in the country was the growing enthusiasm of the young, they set out to ensure that no cost was spared in developing the game.

They even made a lotto twist out of their promotions. The main promotion was called: win the 44 Hundred, the 44th or both.

The 44th was with reference to a special seat in the Lightening Arena; made to order, such that one could get a bird's view of the whole round...due to it's close proximity...yet could through a carefully chosen and hidden route exit the arena at anytime.

PART 06

In essence the XC8 is a game played by 4 teams of 3 players each....making a total of 12 players on a circular hardwood pitch called the ''round''. All 12 players move on some sort of boots on wheels; well designed to ensure players' balance, mobility and control.
PART 05

In any case I did not need a free ticket....for the XC8 games...point made. I did not know this new enthusiast, I dare say, any better. But I knew, at least enough to say a few things about her though. That would be later.

All in all, my wednesday evenings and a better part of most weekends could be seen occupied by outings to the Lightening Arena. When I'm not so keen on going out it's an evening in-door watching from the secured comfort of my laz-boy chair. My preference when I watch at home is the laz-boy chair.

The reason is that, quite frankly the XC8 game can be a little confusing to watch on telly...most times. In a sense when it gets too difficult to keep track of the leading scorer and the team ahead...it serves as a gradual catalyst to a sleepy end.

PART 04

Such it was: the standard introduction she used whenever we met. In essence I did anticipate in pleasant apprehension...the chance meetings we had. She did introduce herself on one of such occasions and I was obliged to reciprocate the gesture.

''Gosh....I thought I knew you....''

At first I cringed....I thought I may have made a terrible mistake: I was about to be insulted by one whom in essence was a familiar stranger. But what began with a positive feeling, changed a bit later to a sublime yet horrific one...eventually became a feeling with the similitude of a deflated balloon.

In any case, she only gave a knowing smile and moved on. Subsequent meetings were also in public places and purely as incidental as the previous ones. And she gives no more than a knowing smile backed up with a hello and small talk.

PART 03

''I know you'', she says, just like anyone would recognise a face frequently seen in the media but I refrained from revealing who I really was, instead I said an hello and went about my way.

PART 02

She discovered a few hours later that this series was some sort of prelude to an international meet....she became aware of the significance surrounding whom she had received the tickets from.

The note sent with them read: one for you and two extras for any of your friends...please come...it means a lot to me. Surely this was one chaos she wasn't keen on taking on....she muses....how in the world was she to choose from all the friends she has?

She does have a lot of friends. some of which had earned the right to be called close friends. Well one can imagine that. I may or may not have earned that right. I never was quite sure where I stood with Zain. It is improbable that I was no more than an acquaintance....

An acquaintance she had gotten familiar with from the frequent but incidental meetings we had hither to her regular attendance of XC8 games. But I couldn't be so certain.

PART 01

She knows a bit of French but she dislikes numbers; the number 44 seemed to ring a bell for her; not that it had anything to do with her age; it was something to do with a particular game called XC8.

A few years ago....to a certain degree... I was an active participant in the XC8 games of the cities...within the country that is. I guess my initial enthusiasm for the game was with reference to it's newness and multiple features. This went on for a while then it gradually waned off.

But I was still a fan...I am still a fan...without the fanaticism though. To be a bit more open about myself: I am never one to delibrately harm another....well maybe I may have been an offender by error in the past.

But essentially, I tend to exhibit a character that borders on the compassionate with a small degree of reservation. That's why I have never been a fanatic....an ardent fan...yes...but not an extreme fan of the XC8 games. What I love is a little healthy competition.

This would closely descibe her as well. She got a recent ticket to the Lightening arena...she didn't think much of it. She learnt that the Lightening arena wasn't the official or initial name of the new XC8 arena; but that only served to make her no more than a little curious. Hopefully, as it was expected, she was as pleasantly surprised as intended.

Anyway the game was still a good few days away, so there was more than enough time to find out more about the event...she did fancy going...there were very few or no odds against this though. The media were at no end in the coverage of the year's nation's series of the XC8 games.
